Development in academics and research
The School of Electrical Engineering & Automation of HIT was established in 1993. It originally consisted of 2 first-level disciplines, Electrical Engineering and Automation as well as Instrumentation Science and Technology. At the end of 2018, according to general plan of the university, the school only retained one first-level discipline, Electrical Engineering and Automation, which was also known as “the originally 6th department”. The discipline covers 2 majors, namely Electrical Engineering and Automation as well as Architectural Electrical Engineering and Intellectualization.
The discipline of Electrical Engineering and Automation has a long history of development. In early 20th century, together with advanced ideas, industrialization was introduced into China. In May 2020, the construction of Harbin Sino-Russian School of Industry began and the school opening ceremony was held in October of the same year. Back in that time, there were only 2 disciplines, Discipline of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and Discipline of Railway Construction. The former is the predecessor of the discipline of Electrical Engineering and Automation. In April 1922, the name of the college was changed into “Sino-Russian School of Industry”, and the two original disciplines were changed to the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Railway Construction, which demonstrates that the discipline of Electrical Engineering is one of the earliest departments founded in HIT and the earliest similar ones built around China.
Since the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the discipline of Electrical Engineering fully reached the social function of colleges. It cultivated a great number of outstanding talents for the country in many areas, including design and control of micro and special motor, electrical system design, power electronics technology and its application, electric drive control, power system automation, industrial automation, architectural electrical engineering, etc. Among them emerged a number of outstanding models such as Li Changchun, Geng Zhaojie, Feng Xisheng, Shang Zhi and many alumni who has made brilliant achievements in their fields.

Throughout a hundred years of construction and development, discipline of Electrical Engineering and Automation has obtained first-class ability and level to cultivate undergraduates, master degree candidates and doctoral candidates domestically. In the 4th round of China Discipline Ranking, it was rated as A- (tied for fifth in the country), which shows that the discipline is on the national leading level in electrical engineering. Moreover, as the birthplace as well as the stalwart successor of HIT motto “Strictest Standard, Greatest Effort”, the discipline will continuously make more contribution to university construction, talents cultivation, national economy and technology development and the realization of the great “Chinese Dream”in the future.
Currently, there are 3 basic teaching teaching & research offices, 2 experiment centers, 12 research institutes, 1 post-doctoral mobile station, 5 second-level master degree authorization centers and 6 undergraduate research directions in the school. The undergraduate research directions are electric machinery, electric appliance, power system and its automation, industrial automation, electrical engineering theory as well as architecture electrical engineering and intellectualization. Great efforts have been taken to cultivate compound talents acquiring various abilities, including project development, engineering design and economic management, etc. Graduates from the discipline work in broad areas such as EE, automation, IT and so on. The discipline focuses not only on the traditional part of electrical engineering, but also the advanced information technology. In this way could students construct integral knowledge system contains both strong and weak electricity, software and hardware. Such pattern of discipline construction helped students broaden their employment fields. At present, the employment situation is in the forefront of the university. National research institutes, large and medium enterprises, government agencies, new high-tech enterprise in EE are the main organizations graduates choose. With the development of aerospace, national defense and electric power, the demand for talents in this field is increasing greatly, which provides the discipline an excellent employment and development prospect.
